Dear participants of the conference, guests, colleagues!

Zhytomyr State University, named after Ivan Franko, Ukraine, welcomes you to the conference “Intercultural Education in the Information Society”!
Changing and improving teachers’ education has been a persistent focus in the unfolding of the information age. Historically, this concern has led to wave after wave of reform initiatives, new programs in university teaching, and learning innovations aimed at restructuring curriculum and instruction throughout the higher-education system. Many of these efforts have targeted the integration of technology into the teacher-education curriculum. Researchers have given special attention to prospects of intercultural education as a prerequisite for meaningful change and a key stimulus for designing new opportunities for cooperation within the ICT-enhanced educational environment.
More recently, attention has focused on the role of foreign-language teacher preparation in view of other major change-generating themes emerging at the dawn of the twenty-first century, respect for cultural and linguistic diversity, the importance of languages, and the promotion of plurilingualism.
The conference topic - "Intercultural Education in the Information Society" - addresses both an imperative and a relevance paralleling these themes. With due regard for the potential of ICT as an educational tool, the project will reveal the logic of and opportunities for using new communication and interaction methods and intercultural communication made possible by technology in the context of foreign-language teacher education. So, we look forward to the Internet dialogues and discussions that evolve during the conference in response to articles and comments shared in this Internet forum.
